Tea Time Please… A Different Kind of Break

Traveling to large cities affords me from time to time the opportunity to enjoy the indulgence of a proper tea – British tea, that is. These spots are sometimes hard to find, or located in quaint, quirky Victorian style buildings which adds to the charm of the experience in my opinion.

I’ve also enjoyed afternoon tea in opulent hotel lobbies, but unlike coffee which you’re grabbing on the go, the tea time experience requires you to sit down, relax and savor the luxury of a tradition which has been enjoyed around the world for centuries.

Growing up in Nigeria, which was a former British colony, afternoon tea was an experience which my parents introduced us to. I remember the simple pleasure of sitting down for 15 or even 30 minutes of pleasant conversation and drinking a cup of tea with some biscuits or homemade cookies.

So, I was delighted to discover some tea houses in San Diego through Yelp which I hope to check out. So, if you’re a tea lover, or simply would like a break from your routine coffee, here are some tea houses which sparked my interest!

Tea Upon Chatsworth: The photos and the menu for November look yummylicious. There’s also an interesting descriptive of the difference between high tea and afternoon tea. Reservations are highly recommended.

Shakespeare’s Corner Shop & Afternoon Tea: This British shop also serves a formal tea and has patio seating. Since it is a shop, it might not be as intimate as other settings, but the plus side it the opportunity to purchase treats and other goodies.

The Aubrey Rose Tea Room: In addition to enjoying tea, the Aubrey Rose tea room allows you to unleash your inner muse in a style reminiscent of the Titanic complete with being able to shop and outfit yourself in a fancy hat, boas, and boots just like the movie.

So, if you’d like a break from the hectic pace that tends to accompany a convention, you might consider a teatime break to relax! Anyone have a favorite tea room or dessert place they would like to share?
